Dakira flies through the air screeching eerily, pursued by Saryonh. She eludes Saryonh as she circles overhead, switching to behind him, and Saryonh turns around and flies after her. He stretches his wings to glide and scans the landscape below. Dakira simply laughs.
"Can you keep up, old man?" she teases.
"You are being careless," Saryonh replies. "Always observe your surroundings in order not to give your enemy the advantage of surprise."
"There's nothing I would be able to do about it anyway, so why should I worry? Any situation would add up to benefit me at the end of the curse, at any rate. Even if I had to be resurrected."
"That is stupid. Just as you should always be able to deal with pain, you should also not seek it. That is the way of your people."
"My people?" Dakira gives a humorless laugh. "It has been a long time since you have been among dralings, Saryonh. Many are guarded, or ruthless, and some are loyal to others in a way that surpasses their concern for their own health. Do not seek pain? Way of my people, indeed!"
"And those are the ones that die painfully."
"Die? We all die. Aranon does not care how."
"Not care how, maybe. But she works to preserve overall life."
"Grrr," shouts Dakira, flying low so that she has to pass through many branches. "You're worse than Lee Cahn's sister! And she tortures more people than a Xioan religious movement. Not to mention a Xioan political war!"
Saryonh banks to the left and catches an updraft. "Shush. I think I hear something below."
Dakira complies and listens also. She hears a faint rustling noise. "Why, that's nothing but wind, you old fool."
Saryonh does not reply, simply stares down. Dakira follows his gaze and sees something that makes her heart stop.
